NOW MONITOR
NEWSLETTER JUNE 2010
The Navel Orange Worm (NOW) has a prolonged flight in the spring (late March to May) with a distinct lull in trap capture in the month of June. The second flight (that affects hull split) starts in late June/early July depending on the year. It is the “lull” period in June that tells the Pest Control Advisor (PCA) a lot about the internal status of the NOW in an orchard.
If the PCA places a new lure in a trap in early June and has essentially zero trap capture the internal population of NOW is low.
If the PCA places a new lure in a trap in early June and captures 3 to 4 or more NOW male moths per week then the population of NOW in the orchard is higher than desired and can indicate problems at hull split and beyond.
The NOW Monitor pheromone lure will also give the PCA a good indication about the start of the second flight (the one that affects hull split in almonds) and when to time a spray.
It is the June period that is perhaps the most valuable time for using the NOW Monitor lures to capture information about the NOW in an orchard!
Trap capture during the second flight is a good indicator of the success (or less than success) of your hull split sprays.
Trap capture during the first flight ia good indicator of the success (or less than success) of your winter sanitation.
Note that to our best knowledge the NOW Monitor lure is valuable for monitoring the internal NOW status of the orchard. We don’t know how external (i.e. neighbors with NOW problems in their orchards) affect the trap capture with traps placed inside an orchard.
