NOW Monitor

NOW MONITOR
Newsletter February 2009

The improved NOW Monitor (Navel Orange Worm (NOW) pheromone monitoring lure) is ready to go in 2009.     We are now offering exclusively the 3-piece lure.

The 3-Piece lure.   3 black rubber rectangles tied together with a paper clip.   Do not separate these 3 pieces.   Place the whole lure inside the trap as shown below.

Do not separate the lure.   Keep all 3 pieces together on the paper clip.

We are no longer using the red rubber septa lure.    They are not as biologically active as the 3-Piece lure and catch much fewer NOW moths.   See trap capture data from 2008 on this site.   The new 3-Piece lures caught many times more NOW months than the red rubber septa

The Red Rubber Septa lure.  These are no longer offered.

How to use the NOW Monitor Lure:

The NOW Monitor 3-Piece lure attracts and captures the male NOW moth.   What you have in the traps are male moths attracted to a calling female.        You are not capturing female NOW with this lure !

Our trap capture data in 2008 indicated the following:

A - The NOW flight starts from late March to early April and lasts until late May or early June.
B - There is a period of low to zero capture of the months from mid-June to July.
C - In mid-July or so the 2nd flight starts and there is fairly continuous flight until the flight stops in October.

What We Have Learned from the Trap Capture:

A -  The higher the trap capture numbers the greater your potential problem
B- Low trap capture can be construed as having low in-field populations of NOW. Note the word  in-field.  The NOW Monitor lure may or may not be accurate for “fly in” moths from outside your orchard.
C - The NOW Monitor lure can be used to time a “hull split” spray.   Monitor the first generation of NOW and count your degree days.
See Navel Orange Worm - the Insect and note how the insects develops with different degree days on different crops.
D -  Note the period between the first generation and the second (Mid June into July).   If you are capturing male moths during this period (even at a low level) you have a high population in the field.   This is a critical time to monitor, especially in problem orchards.
E - The trap capture in the second and third flights is a good indication of how well your “hull split” spray killed the NOW.
F - Trap capture in the second and third flights can tell you how critical it is to harvest your crop before NOW damage becomes a problem
G - Year to year data can show you how well your winter sanitation program is.

The NOW Monitor 3-piece lure lasts 3 months !

They come in packages of 25.   The lures should be stored frozen until used.   In the freezer they will remain viable for several years.
