Mealybug Predators
There are two Mealybug species that are a problem in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The first and most common is the Grape Mealybug (Pseudococcus maritimus). This insects life cycle is explained very well at the University of California IPM web site. The other Mealybug present is the Vine Mealybug (Planococcus ficus). Again this insect's life cycle is explained very well at the University of California IPM web site. For the Grape Mealybug we recommend the use
of Cryptolaemus montrouzier
and lacewings for the management of "hot spots" in the field. From
last year's harvest the place of greater density of infestations of the
Grape Mealybug are known. In the late spring, apply 1 to 2 applications
of these insects in the higher density areas. For the Vine Mealybug we recommend the use of a different predator. It is the wasp Anagyrus pseudococci. The Vine Mealybug has many generations per year. Once your vineyard is infested it is very important to keep pressure on this insect to manage its spread. Chemical controls work well but they often conflict with the number of days to harvest so they cannot be used in certain situations. Anagyrus can always be used. There are no days to harvest intervals. Start to apply Anagyrus about the time of girdling (post berry set) and make 3 to 4 applications weekly. California Ag Supply will have Cyrptolaemus montrouzier, Lacewings and Anagyrus pseudococci available. To order these insects, contact us at : California
