FEAR AND GREED
REDUX

2011 was our second in a row cool summer.   The result of these cooler temperatures was getting brix and or sugar/acid balance late.    In the San Joaquin Valley the late season was compounded with labor shortages in the raisin market.    In the coastal areas the blanket of fog that hugged the coast resulted in later than normal harvests.   Thank goodness for a late season (October) heat spell that moved the grape ripening process along.

The cheapest way to adjust your crop load in anticipation of unusual weather is through pruning in the winter.    Grape bud analysis can tell you what your maximum crop load can be.
